It's time for the Girl Scout Chocolates & Magazines Program and we are excited to get the year started.

- October 16--Girl orders due to troop(Date set by individual troops may vary)
- November 3, 5 and 6--Product delivered to Service Units, troops, and parents. Be sure to pick up when scheduling your order.
- November 7--Booth sales begin
IMPORTANT INFORMATION:
Question: Can new girls who join Girl Scouting for the 2013 membership year participate in the Girl Scout Chocolates & Magazines Program?
Answer: Absolutely! Girls who register for the 2013 membership year can participate in the Girl Scout Chocolates & Magazines Program beginning on September 1.
Although the official membership year does not begin until October 1 - it is acceptable for new troops to begin meeting and for new girls to be welcomed into established troops as early as September 1 as long as they have completed their membership application for the 2013 membership year and, in the case of new troops, the troop leaders have completed their required basic training as outlined in Volunteer Essentials.
All program levels from Daisy to Ambassador are eligible to participate in taking orders with the chocolate/nut order card, online activities for magazine sales, chocolate/nut "promises," Facebook and the booth sales. We strongly recommend that safety guidelines for all internet activities should be followed. Girls under age 13 should only use the internet and Facebook with adult supervision.
Troop and Service Unit Volunteers:
Thank you for agreeing to serve your troop and/or service unit in providing leadership for the Girl Scout Chocolates & Magazines Program.
New this year: All volunteers who are assisting with product sales activities are required to be both an approved member (completed a volunteer application and background check) for Girl Scouts of Greater Atlanta and be a registered member of GSUSA, the national Girl Scout organization.
For easy online membership to GSUSA, please click on the following link. The cost to register is $12.
You can register here.
For the online volunteer application and background check, please click the following link. This ensures the timeliness and accuracy of the information displayed in the application. Please allow three business days for the background check to be completed. If you have any questions, please contact Shirley Anne Cruz at 770-702-9157 or scruz@gsgatl.org.

Greetings to all Girl Scout leaders, volunteers and parents!
I hope you are enjoying your summer. Our summer resident and day camp programs are in full swing and are a great opportunity for girls to experience the outdoors in a safe and fun environment. Girls who go to camp learn to be self-reliant, get along with others and try new things - all while hiking, singing, swimming and having a great time.
Great news - the Gold Award Wall is up!! In our Mableton Service Center, the new Gold Award Wall is a striking tribute to all of the young women who have achieved the Gold Award. The next time you are in the building, take a moment to admire this tribute. Also, take your Girl Scouts and let them see where their own name will live when they earn the highest award in Girl Scouting -the Gold Award.
Yours in Girl Scouting -

Physician Assistants "Prescribe" Healthy Hikes in Georgia's State Parks
Everyone knows that exercise is one key to being healthy, but not everyone enjoys going to the gym. Georgia's State Park system has teamed up with the Georgia Association of Physician Assistants (GAPA) to make healthy living a bit more fun. Through the new "Rx for Fitness" Program, physician assistants can prescribe healthy hikes in the great outdoors, and patients can turn in their "prescriptions" for free park passes.
"Rx for Fitness" is part of the State Park system's new Tons of Fun Fitness Challenge which encourages citizens to use outdoor recreation as part of their regular exercise. Park visitors may find that exploring a canyon is more fun than a step machine, and that hiking along a waterfall burns more calories than a treadmill. The parks also offer less traditional exercise, like lake swimming, geocaching and disc golf. Even some state historic sites offer walking trails in beautiful settings.
Members of GAPA will be able to help their patients in a new way, by identifying those who need more exercise and suggesting they go for a hike. By trading their "prescription" for a free pass, patients will not need to pay the $5 parking fee on their first visit. Those who decide that regular hikes can help them meet weight-loss goals can choose to buy an Annual Park Pass.
To learn more about the Tons of Fun fitness challenge and all the supporting activities offered through Georgia's state parks and historic sites, go to http://tonsoffun.org/.

Girl Scout Ceremonies & Traditions
Girl Scout Ceremonies of any type are a great way to help girls feel like they are part of a national and global community. Girl Scout ceremonies can celebrate almost anything.
Key ceremonies including Court of Awards, Investiture, and Bridging/Rededication, mark Girl Scout "rites of passage." Girl Scouts reflect upon what they have achieved through Court of Awards, welcome each other to the Girl Scout movement through Investiture, and move up a level or renew the Promise through Bridging/Rededication ceremonies.
Begin planning your Investiture, Bridging, and Rededication Ceremonies in July and August for a September date as the troops revive for the school year. The most important part about ceremonies is to keep them planned by Girl Scouts for Girl Scouts. For more ceremonies information, creative ideas and how to conduct them as girl led programs, see the attached tool kits.
Ceremonies and Traditions Starter Guide
Ceremony Notebook
Dear Service Unit Director,
We want to better understand how we can support you in hosting Service Unit Ceremonies. Please share, on a Service Unit Level, how many ceremonies were held between October 1, 2011 and the present date, the type of ceremonies held, the number of Girl Scouts participating, and the (approximate) number of community members in attendance.
If you have any suggestions of how we can better support your delivery of Girl Scout Ceremonies and Traditions, please include those too.
Email responses to bshelton@gsgatl.org with Girl Scout Ceremonies and Traditions in the subject line. (No response from your SU will indicate 0 ceremonies were held by your Service Unit.)
Sincerely,
Brook Shelton

Georgia Orienteering Club (GAOC)
Orienteering is a cross-country running sport, demanding physical and mental fitness. The sport emphasizes map reading and the ability to make quick decisions under physically challenging conditions.
Although Orienteering is a highly organized sport, families and individuals may participate on a non-competitive basis as well. Hiking is non-competitive, requiring the same skills, but you can enjoy the forest scenery at a more leisurely pace. Whether you are Orienteering or map hiking the challenge is the same and the courses are organized similarly
GAOC hosts a variety of Orienteering meets and special events in the state of Georgia from September through May. Events offer beginner, intermediate, and advanced courses, as well as beginner instruction. To find an event close to you, check out the Schedule under Local Events at http://www.gaorienteering.org/. You will find tips and educational information on the same site.
GAOC's next meet is on Saturday, September 1, at Jones Bridge (Chattahoochee River National Recreation Area.) September 1 is National Orienteering Day, and GAOC is celebrating with a free meet! The contact person for this event is Jeff Lybarger 404-245-7398
FAQs:
1) What do I do at a meet?
You use a map and a compass to complete an Orienteering course. It usually takes an hour or two, and takes place in a natural setting like a park.
2) Do I need any experience?
No. We have courses for all skill levels, and we have beginner instruction at every meet.
3) What kind of compass do I need?
Beginners don't need a compass. It does sort of get in the way when you are trying to learn to read a map. But if you "just gotta have one," bring a baseplate compass.
4) How much does it cost?
The entry fee is $7 for club members and $10 for non-members. (FREE on September 1!) And if you're going out in a group and just need another map, that's just $3/map. Also, most parks also have a parking fee or usage fee that you have to pay. (State Parks charge $5 to park).
5) Is there training available?
We have training available at every local meet, just ask. It is free, and is given by our volunteers. Show up at 10am for training.
6) What should I wear?
For beginners, wear long pants. Long sleeve shirts are also popular. Hikers usually wear sturdy walking shoes. Runners usually wear running shoes. Otherwise just dress for the weather.

Concrete Jungle
An organization called Concrete Jungle recently started a farm in East Point. They have work days every Saturday and everything they grow is donated to shelters in Atlanta. They can always use extra hands with weeding, watering, planting, transplanting, and other jobs on the farm. They would love to have Girl Scouts come out for a work day.
Contact them through their website or contact Lolly at lolly.beckpancer@gmail.com.

that makes a real difference in your daughter's life -
a quality experience camping with Mom!
Ahh, Serendipity! The name says it all! When the hustle and bustle of your day is filled carpooling, helping with homework and managing the entire family's schedule - you need to get away.
A weekend at Serendipity gives moms (or aunts, grandmothers or other special women) and their girls an opportunity to spend time together without all the distractions life can throw at you, nestled in a gorgeous setting at Camp Meriwether, near Newnan, GA.
Serendipity offers fun, drop-in activities to participate in at your own pace - and on your own schedule. Do as much or as little as the two of you decide!
(Spaces in the cabins and platform tents go fast, so register early!)
